Organisers of Munich’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade meet President of Ireland

Munich was an important port of call on the recent state visit to Germany of the President of Ireland, Mary McAleese.

From L-R - Frank McLynn,(Grand Marshal St. Patrick’s Day Parade Munich & President Deutsch-Irischer-Freundeskreis Bayern e.V.), Mr McAleese, Mrs Mary McAleese (President of Ireland), Paul Daly (Chairman of the Munich St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee)

Speaking to around 250 representatives of Bavaria’s Irish community at a reception on Tuesday 27 February, President McAleese expressly praised the dedication of the volunteers responsible for the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Munich, pointing out that the Parade is now the largest Irish event east of Dublin. She thanked Frank McLynn (Grand Marshal of the Parade and president of the German-Irish Friendship Society D.I.F.) and Paul Daly (chairman of the St. Patrick’s Day organisation committee), on behalf of all voluntary helpers involved in the Parade, for their commitment and efforts.

In a speech at the following state banquet in honour of the President’s visit, held in the magnificent Antiquarium hall in the Imperial Residence, Bavarian Prime Minister Günther Beckstein also held up the St. Patrick’s Day Parade as a unique and impressive example of Bavarian-Irish friendship.

On 16 March 2008, the 13th St. Patrick’s Day Parade will take place in honour of the patron saint of Ireland, St. Patrick. The parade starts from Münchner Freiheit at 12 noon and will progress down Leopold-/Ludwigstrasse to finish at Odeonsplatz. After speeches from the guests of honour, a programme of Celtic music and dance will be held at Odeonsplatz.
