Bio Alison Moffat-McLynn – English and German

I am enormously proud to have been chosen as the Grand Marshal of the 2026 St Patrick’s Day Parade. This year is the 40th anniversary of my arrival in Munich, the focus of my personal and professional life since 1986. With Scottish, Irish and English roots, I came here from Liverpool (sometimes known as Ireland’s secret capital) to put my German degree to use, and became a freelance translator in those pre-laptop, pre-email days.

The Irish music scene was a magnet for me right from the start. I met my husband Frank in the Irish Folk Pub, today the Old Irish; we began playing music together as a duo and as part of Greensleeves, and organising concerts as the Irish Folk Club.  When Mike Spillane told us and Paul Daly about his idea of a parade for St Patrick’s Day, we all said, “Don’t be crazy!” – and then did it anyway. At that time under the aegis of the Deutsch-Irischer Freundeskreis Bayern e.V., every year of the parade brought new challenges, new successes and, very occasionally, new failures that taught us valuable lessons. Thanks to the commitment and energy of the many, many participants, it soon developed into the biggest St Patrick’s Day parade on mainland Europe. A highlight of the Munich calendar, it has become a symbol of cultural diversity that reflects the welcome we have received from the city we call home. The St Patrick’s Day Parade is now in the hands of a dedicated team who have taken it forward to new heights and records.

I also head the Munich Céilí Band; founded in 1999 to play at a “Monster Céilí” in Unterhaching, we have played Irish dance music for countless céilís and events in our almost three-decade history and are proud to be the final act on the main stage at the St Patrick’s Day Parade After-Party.

The Munich St Patrick’s Day Parade is not a single story; it’s a whole tapestry woven from hundreds of individual stories past and present. I’ve been part of the parade in many different roles from the start – designing the first magazines and flyers, walking along with the Deutsch-Irischer Freundeskreis Bayern, on a float with the Munich Céilí Band, playing on the stage and MCing, and behind the scenes – and I can’t wait to be part of this year’s new chapter.

Ich bin sehr stolz darauf, zum Grand Marshal der St.-Patrick’s-Day-Parade 2026 gewählt worden zu sein. In diesem Jahr jährt sich zum 40. Mal meine Ankunft in München, der Stadt, die seit 1986 der Mittelpunkt meines privaten und beruflichen Lebens ist. Mit schottischen, irischen und englischen Wurzeln kam ich aus Liverpool – manchmal auch als „Irlands heimliche Hauptstadt” bezeichnet – hierher, um mein Germanistikstudium zu nutzen. In jener Zeit vor Laptops und E-Mails wurde ich freiberufliche Übersetzerin.

Die irische Musikszene hat mich von Anfang an angezogen. Ich lernte meinen Mann Frank im Irish Folk Pub, dem heutigen „Old Irish“, kennen. Wir begannen, als Duo und als Trio „Greensleeves“ gemeinsam Musik zu machen und als „Irish Folk Club“ Konzerte zu organisieren. Als Mike Spillane uns und Paul Daly von seiner Idee einer Parade zum St. Patrick’s Day erzählte, riefen wir alle: „Bist du verrückt?!“ – und haben es dann trotzdem gemacht. Damals organisiert vom Deutsch-Irischen Freundeskreis Bayern e. V. brachte die Parade jedes Jahr neue Herausforderungen, neue Erfolge und – ganz selten – auch neue Misserfolge mit sich, aus denen wir wertvolle Erkenntnisse gewonnen haben. Dank des Engagements und der Energie der vielen, vielen Teilnehmer entwickelte sich die Parade bald zur größten St. Patrick’s Day Parade auf dem europäischen Festland. Inzwischen ist sie  ein Höhepunkt des Münchner Veranstaltungskalenders und steht als Wahrzeichen der kulturellen Vielfalt und der Herzlichkeit, die uns in unserer Wahlheimat entgegengebracht worden ist. Die St. Patrick’s Day Parade liegt nun in den Händen eines engagierten Teams, das sie zu neuen Höhen und Rekorden geführt hat.

Ich leite auch die Munich Céilí Band. Die Band wurde 1999 als irische Tanzband für einen „Monster Céilí” in Unterhaching gegründet. In unserer fast dreißigjährigen Geschichte haben wir bei unzähligen Céilís und Veranstaltungen gespielt. Wir sind stolz darauf, das Musik- und Tanzprogramm auf der Hauptbühne der  St. Patrick’s Day Parade After-Party abzurunden und das Publikum zum Tanzen aufzurufen.

Die Münchner St. Patrick’s Day Parade ist nicht nur eine einzelne Geschichte, sondern ein ganzes Gewebe aus Hunderten von individuellen Geschichten aus Vergangenheit und Gegenwart. Ich war von Anfang an in vielen verschiedenen Rollen Teil der Parade: Ich habe die ersten Magazine und Flyer gestaltet, bin mit dem Deutsch-Irischen Freundeskreis Bayern mitgelaufen, spielte mit der Munich Céilí Band auf einem Festwagen, habe auf der Bühne gespielt, als Moderatorin fungiert und hinter den Kulissen gearbeitet. Jetzt kann ich es kaum erwarten, Teil des neuen Kapitels in diesem Jahr zu sein.
